I got a golden ticket

No.. not charlie in the chocolate factory, I got a invite to open a blog on wordpress.com.

Will I switch.. probably not, I use tinkering on this box to procrastinate.. and wordpress.com doesn’t have as many knobs, so my main aim isnt fulfilled. BUT I am not the target market for it.

What I like about wordpress.com:

  • multiple themes
  • ajax fadeouts look cool
  • UI for editing posts is nicer than the standard wordpress one.
  • much simpler interface than the one blogspot one uses.
  • no annoying blogspot AD on the top of the blog.
  • don’t have to worry about keeping up to date with all the patches

What I don’t like about wordpress.com:

  • I can’t add a theme
  • I can’t edit a theme to put advertisements on for example. (I have got $10 this month from them..)
  • No statistics so I can’t see which posts are popular, or who is linking to me.
  • No revenue model that I can see.

The last two are my major concern. I live for stats. I like to know how popular postings are, and where the traffic is coming from.

But the major one is financial. If wordpress.com can’t make money somehow it won’t stay in business. Matt’s a great guy.. but he still needs to feed himself and pay for the bandwidth somehow.. So I’m guessing that he will go for some ad-revenue, or maybe their will be a premium version like livejournal does.

So Matt+Team congratulations on a excellent product.. and I hope it becomes all you wish it will.
