Colo Recommendations
Posted by Ian Holsman
Hi.
I need a physical box in a colo somewhere in the US. something which will give me root access, and leave me alone to do my work. (RHEL4/5 as a base OS would be great).
anyone have any recommendations?

Here in New Zealand Rimu Hosting have a good reputation: http://rimuhosting.com/
i used to be a big fan of ev1servers.net but theplanet has since bought them. I have not had any problems with the new parent company, but it’s a concern… good prices for dedicated machines still.
I’ve know people using rackspace: http://www.rackspace.com/index.php
But, I’m using layeredtech: http://www.layeredtech.com/
we cut over to JohnCompanies for colo a while back and have been very pleased. housed out of San Diego, i believe. we chose them on the basis of recommendations from a bunch of different people.
I definitely recommend Server Beach. Very straight forward, no fuss. If you know what you are doing they are a great option.

If you were looking for VPS hosting, I’d recommend Slicehost but never having needed colo hosting, I can’t say.
But if hardcore VPS hosting is an option, you really can’t beat Slicehost. I’ve never been happier with a host than I am with Slicehost. Their setup is brilliant—it would be really difficult to improve on the way they do things. They don’t have RHEL, but Ubuntu Dapper, CentOS 4.3, Gentoo (2006.1), Debian Etch and Fedora Core 6 are all supported. Oh and the price is right to boot.
I wish I could give them a more glowing review, but that’s as glowy as I can get.
Thanks !
I’ve got 6 good places to choose from now.
