ADSL2 Upgrade is it worth it?

Australia is going through the it’s next iteration of bandwidth speed, and the politicians have proposed to make it even faster
I’ve got a couple of issues with this.
- I don’t see any infrastructure build out to accompany this. (there might be and I haven’t looked properly), so all they have done is move the problem to the exchange instead of the house.
- You still get charged 8c/Meg have the same quotas as the regular ADSL (1.5mbs) lines.
- The main bottleneck (the link between the US and Australia) isn’t being upgraded at that level either.
- Latency over the pacific ocean will still suck, and might get worse.
So what I envisage if this comes across is very fast (and expensive) connectivity to local services, and a slowdown things overseas.
I think the money would be better spent investing in the current bottlenecks, which are:- the link to the USA
- the cost of running things locally. (see tinfinger’s analysis of local costs)
and once those are resolved and can support the extra capacity that ADSL2 and ‘super fast’ internet will cause should we be proposing the super fast internet in Australia.
