We’ve been using the ‘no-name’ brands from the supermarkets lately, and my wife has great delight trying to pick who the actual manufacturer is by looking at how it is packaged. more than not the packaging is the same.
but here comes the scary part.. the dietary info. we looked at some butter, and the calories in the ‘home’ brand were about 50% more, as was the fat content.
and there are some other scarier things.
Take Calcium propionate.
Reactions can be anything from the usual range of food intolerance symptoms: migraine and headaches; gastro-intestinal symptoms including stomach aches, irritable bowel, diarrhoea, urinary urgency, bedwetting; eczema and other itchy skin rashes; nasal congestion (stuffy or runny nose); depression, unexplained tiredness, impairment of memory and concentration, speech delay; tachycardia (fast heart beat); growing pains, loud voice (no volume control); irritability, restlessness, inattention, difficulty settling to sleep, night waking and night terrors.
This was in the no-name bread from the supermarket, but not present in the bread from local bakeries.
I’m thinking the lack of brand identity (and the fact that manufacturers don’t have to worry about them corrupting their brand) is causing them to make these products as cheap as possible without regard to what goes in them.
and to make matters worse, our online grocer doesn’t show nutritional information on their site making it harder to figure this stuff out.
oh.. they also use this preservative in the US & UK, but not in general Europe for some reason.
