AOL has just added 2 ‘buddies’ to my default group. a ‘shopping’ buddy, and a ‘movie’ buddy.
I can now type in the name of a movie (or a product like a printer) and AOL will give me some details about them.
Great Idea. I’d love to find out how many leads they generate by doing this.
Let’s hope the IM providers don’t get too excited/spammy and fill my buddy list with 100’s of bots.

Another IM service which is not interoperable with the others. I’m talking about Google’s Latest Offering
So for me to talk to all my friends online I need
AND google’s newest offering.
has anyone read the terms and conditions yet? do you think they will be logging everything you type?
I bet people haven’t. .. luckily for you they aren’t.
When Google’s Talk interoperates with all the others (which is possible on the server side with jabber) then I’ll start using it, as it will save me time.. until then.. ping me on the others ;-)
Oh.. why is google doing this? same reason as they are doing mail.. to stop you using the MSN and yahoo portals..
So my guess is that the next service google launches is a finance aggregator.
They have high CPM rates, and are also a major reason why people go to their competitiors..
Update: Ok.. reading the developer docs sheds some more light on what this all about, and why people my be interested in this Yet Another IM Service… They plan on integrating Voice with it using SIP. This would explain the dark fibre they are bought a couple of months back I would guess.
The only real way I can see google competing with the other VOIP carriers (which they will interoperate with) is by offering better service, as most carriers are cheap enough.
Personally I hope they invent (and opensource) a better codec. my VOIP conversations lately have been dreadful, so bad in fact my boss threatened to fire me If I use the Ip-phone to call him again.
