after reading James’s experience with his old macbook pro battery
I decided to go get mine out of the cupboard and throw it away.
from reading the comments on that post, the battery is like a ticking time bomb, once if becomes fully discharged it is easy to short.
so if you are like me, and never actually returned the old recalled battery when you got a new one, I suggest you dispose of it before you get a nasty surprise like James did.

Has anyone else noticed that mail.app takes 100% CPU?
It frequently hangs when I search, and consumes all my cpu making my macbook slow down to a crawl.
I’ve tried rebuilding, but it doesn’t seem to work..
anybody else seeing this problem with their mac?

I have my macbook back.
It has a new harddrive, but the heat is still there.. The support tech insisted that the heat was being caused by the faulty hard drive. by that time I just wanted my computer back so I could actually do some work on it. Hopefully I can figure out how to fix the the thermal glue myself without breaking the box.
I’ve decided to start from scratch, and reinstall stuff as required. (I had 3 years of crap on my old box)
I am also doing like Leo is, and running parallels (as a I need a FreeBSD host to do some testing).

I just left the streetwise store who I put my laptop in for a service over a week ago.
They haven’t even done anything with it. (It was promised back to me yesterday).
oh.. and the best part.. the tech support guy who ‘helped’ me said the overheating is not covered under warranty and has never heard of the issue before.
This is interesting, as when I spoke to their other tech support person he knew about it, and the suggest fix of wiping the thermal grease off the box.
Luckily for me, I had a open apple case# saying it was a warranty job. So that should set things right.
but the unlucky part for me is I will probably have to wait another week for my machine to be returned.
Oh.. and the hard-drive is unrecoverable. 2-3 months work down the drain. (I was backing the thing up when it broke)

Invalid node structure
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
this happened after my toddler managed to pull the laptop off my desk.
Of course.. it comes at the best possible time.
An exam in 4 hours, (another tomorrow as well), and then I’m off to singapore to present something (which I need the PC for).
After speaking with support.. I’m looking at ~1 week turnaround on the machine.

anybody else having issues with their power connection?
since yesterday the little magnetic connector has been refusing to show it’s green/orange light even though I have it plugged in. and I have to wiggle it for it to work.
About 5 minutes ago it refused to light up no matter how much wiggling I did.
oh.. it worked again..
I guess it is time to buy a 2nd power cord ‘just in case’
combined with the extreme heat this thing generates it is very frustrating. I can get the logic board replaced.. but I don’t have a week spare (no laptop == no money coming in)
I think I might have to buy a 2nd ‘spare’ laptop for these cases.. and no.. It won’t be a apple.

I know it sounds like a funny question to ask.. how to make my machine more noisy.. especially since the Sun T2000 arriving on monday is going to make me deaf..
but my shiny powerbook is burning my legs, and my desk isn’t designed to act as a heat-sync so this thing will probably burn it.
Is the solution to just get a piece of aluminium and sit the the laptop on that (a kind of brute force external heatsync) ?
my hard drives are running at about 43c/109F at the moment.
It’s not helping that Melbourne is having a hot spell at 30c for the last couple of days either.

About 4 hours after I blogged about my frustration with apple, I got a knock on the door and a man with a MacBook in his hand was on the other side.
Sun also sent me a confirmation email saying my sunfire will be here on the 26th…
time to find a USB->serial converter, or better yet.. does anyone know of a cheap termserver? that would probably be a better option long-term.
one tip on ‘switchers’ to x86.. the activity monitor has a ‘Kind’ column.. so you can see what apps you need to rebuild/find.

My credit card check finally went through.. and now my SunFire is being processed, so now it is a race.
Will my new powerbook (now scheduled to arrive on the 26th due to lack of intel processors they tell me) or my SunFire?
The other interesting thing about all this is how both companies are handling it.
Sun set my expectations low.. I knew they were in high demand, and they told me It’s going to take a LOT of time before I get it… Thats cool.. I can wait, and I’m not planning to do things on it now.
Apple on the other hand PROMISED it on the 10th. (I don’t read small print.. when they put a estimated delivery date on a page.. I take that as a promise).
On the 9th I started getting excited (I don’t get out much) as I saw the credit card pre-auth go through .. only to be recieve an email on the 11th saying
Due to an unexpected delay, we were unable to ship your product(s)
by the date originally quoted to you.
and proceed to use legal slimey words saying how it was only a estimate blah blah blah.
um.. guys.. you have had the order for a month and only 1 day after you it was supposed to be shipped you figure out you ran out of intel chips?
I’m guessing that what really happened is they got some large order and bumped me. I don’t mind them doing this.. IF they tell me ahead of time, not after they have swiped my card and hit my ship-date.
and to make matters worse, they didn’t remove the pre-auth on my credit card.. so now I have about $200 credit left on it, and it took 2 phone calls and a ‘speak to my manager’ before they would do anything about it.
Apple.. are you listening.. you make cool shiny toys, but your SERVICE SUCKS.
